Okay new question!

How do you decide what the front of a pendant is?  Corollary: does the decision come before or after the pendant is actually made? Or during the making?  Additional corollary: does the stone/bead itself have an influence on what becomes the front?

This question comes from the fact that I sometimes wear Fog & Smoke #4 with the opposite side facing front than is in the picture.

For some pieces, it's very simple -- there's only one way it can go.  That's usually because I've had to tie off wires behind a stone, or there's an unsightly jumble of wires supporting the stone, or the focal piece is something like dichroic glass which only has one pretty side.  For things like your pendant, that's not a factor, so I usually look at the piece once I've set the stone(s) and am getting ready to terminate the wires, and decide which side I like better and put the wire ends on the opposite side so they won't be visible.  (Once in a while I'll end up with wire terminations on both sides of a piece, but I try really hard to tuck them all out of sight.)  The focal stone(s) usually play a large role in deciding which way is front, since patterned stones are often prettier on one side than the other.  Sometimes, though, I'll look at a piece once I'm done and realize that it's backwards (or upside down) and flip it over for the photo, and a few pieces end up being reversible.  And sometimes things get photographed backwards by accident!

cool!  Thanks for the answer!

Sometimes I do chalk pastel art.  (I hesitate to call them drawings, because they're very abstract: emotions vomited onto the page)  Often I'll turn the page as I'm working on it to get a better angle for a swoopy line I'm doing and decide that O Hai I like that angle better for 'up'.  It's good to know that other art forms are subject to the same sort of thing.  :D
